Somontano D.O.

Somontano D.O.

Somontano is a region of Alto Aragón that is exceptional on two fronts: its rich natural environment and the beauty of its historical heritage: Alquézar, Torreciudad and the cave paintings found in the Sierra de Guara are fine examples. Lying close to the Pyrenees and with the Vero river running through it, Somontano offers exceptional conditions for growing vines. The rolling hills, dun coloured limestone, highly permeable soils, extreme winters and short summer create unparalleled agro-climatic conditions for producing excellent wines. The Romans discovered this almost twenty centuries ago and lovers of good wine still appreciate the results today.

A number of influences come into play in the Somontano landscape: the Pyrenean foothills, where the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Reserve is to be found, the Sierra de Salinas, the Vero and Cinca rivers, which wind their way through the area and a skyline of vineyards, olive groves, holm oaks and almond trees.

In 1985 Viñas del Vero and a number of other local wineries instituted the Somontano Denomination of Origin which as well as being a benchmark for quality stands for respect for tradition and geographical provenance, given that all the grapes used to make Somontano D.O. wines come from vineyards in the region. Somontano is an innovative, vibrant Denomination of Origin that in a few short years has gained an excellent reputation in the wine world both in Spain and internationally.

Somontano es tierra de aventuras

The capital of Somontano is Barbastro, which consists of some thirty municipalities. Situated on the way to the plain, just over 50 kilometres from Huesca, the region is watered by two rivers: the Vero and the Cinca. The Vero is famous for its ravines, canyons and gorges, a real paradise for thousands of adventure sports enthusiasts, who visit it every year. The river is also a paradise for wines. It is for this reason that our wines bear its name.

Viñas del Vero and other wineries in the area set up the Somontano “Denominación de Origen” in 1985 and, despite having a short history, it has already gained recognition within our borders and beyond. More than just a benchmark for quality, this “Denominación” stands for respect for a geographical region, for a tradition and a vision of an extraordinary future, guaranteed by the fact that all the grapes that are used to produce our wines come from the vineyards of Somontano.

A place to enjoy

Somontano" is, according to the Dictionary of the “Real Academia Española”, the “land or region situated at the foot of a mountain”.
The Somontano of Barbastro, the place where Viñas del Vero produces its wines, is much more than this.
